Overview

 

Ensures the medical care of all individuals in the houses by providing direction to AMAP staff, completing all regulatory reports, and acting as a liaison between hospitals, clinics, and consultants, to ensure accurate coordination and delivery of services.

Responsibilities

Primary duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:

 

  • Coordinates medical services for individuals by establishing and maintaining provider contacts and regularly consulting with Physicians, interdisciplinary teams, and schools to ensure proper medical care is provided.
  • Provides direction to AMAP staff by meeting on a routine basis and observing nursing care given to individuals to ensure proper treatment and care are being administered.
  • Oversees psychiatric care, including completion of psychiatric status reports and attendance at psychiatric consultations and maintains all applicable State and Federal regulations about such.
  • Assesses individuals’ condition daily by observing, reviewing documentation, and physically evaluating residents in person to ensure good health is maintained.
  • Serves as a member of the interdisciplinary team by compiling reports and making recommendations on individuals’ medical care and plans to ensure individuals are receiving the highest quality of care.
  • Serves as primary contact for physicians by informing, updating, and keeping them abreast of all IDT recommendations to ensure the coordination of individuals’ medical care.
  • Administers medication by measuring appropriate dosage levels to ensure individuals’ health.
  • Ensures adequate nursing coverage at the ICF by completing weekly work schedules and weekly treatment schedules.
  • Responds to emergencies by assessing the situation, assisting in the administration of first aid, and contacting outside assistance as necessary.
  • Completes staff training relevant to individuals’ health needs and medication administration, including certification and re-certification of medication administration abilities in compliance with state regulations.
  • Ensures appropriate ordering of medications by reviewing inventory and completing proper forms to ensure the necessary supply of medication is available for individuals.
  • Participates in the on-call one weekend a month and covers on-call for the Nurse manager's PTO and sick time.
  • Performs additional related duties as requested by the supervisor.
  • Ensures that work-related safety procedures are in place and are being adhered to by staff. Observance of an unsafe act or a potentially hazardous work environment must be immediately reported to the supervisor and/or safety committee.

Qualifications

  • Must be an NYS licensed Registered Nurse; BS degree preferred. 
  • Licensure includes CPR training, child abuse, and administering medication procedures.
  • Six months of hospital experience and one year of health care experience supporting people with intellectual and other developmental disabilities are preferred.
