Overview

The Brookville Center for Children’s Services offers a variety of special education services for children ages 3-21 with intellectual and other developmental disabilities. Children are referred to the program from their local school district’s committee on preschool or special education.

Responsibilities

Primary duties and responsibilities include but not limited to:

 

STANDARD 1: Professional Duties
a. Under teacher supervision, assist with students.
b. Attend staff and parent meetings as assigned.
c. Appropriately participate in daily planning sessions with teachers to understand the educational interventions.
d. Fulfill specific assignments as required by teacher. Timely preparation of classroom materials.
e. Participate in maintaining attractive, safe and hygienic classroom environment.
f. Under direction of teacher, maintain an appropriate educational environment with respect to health and safety. Regularly clean and disinfect countertops, tables and toys.
g. Provide adequate bus, hallway and playground supervision.
h. Help with preparation of snack and clean-up activities.
i. Perform related duties, as required.
j. Under direction of teacher, provide children with personal care and assistance in all activities of daily living.
k. Facilitate appropriate communications and interactions between adults and peers.
l. Attend team meetings as assigned.
m. Carry out classroom specific and individual behavior management program under supervision of teacher.

 

STANDARD 2: Professional Behavior
a. Cooperate and conduct self in manner appropriate to school setting.
b. Adhere to program specific policies and procedures.
c. Perform other assigned duties as required.

 

STANDARD 3: Professional Development
a. Attend and participate in required in-services to demonstrate 15 hours of approved training in the first 6 months of employment and 30 hours of approved training within 2 years.
b. Attend and participate in supervision and implement recommendations appropriately.
c. Attend staff meetings with classroom teacher.


STANDARD 4: Adheres to general policies of the organization/regulators including:
a. Code of Ethical Conduct.
b. Emergency/disaster preparedness protocols.
c. Departmental in-service education program requirements; may need to fulfill hours outside of agency hours.
d. Fire/Safety prevention protocols.
e. Policies and procedures (attendance, punctuality, appearance, professional attitude, etc.)
f. Quality Improvement activities.
g. Job related self-development education activities.
h. Infection control practices and procedures.
i. Regulatory requirements and annual physical examination and Mantoux testing.

 

STANDARD 5: Performs other related duties as required.
a. Demonstrate understanding of the needs of children and visitors for each specific age group.
b. Address safety and psychological needs of the special age groups, as appropriate, in the performance of work activities.
c. Address the needs of special groups, hearing impaired, physically challenged and various issues relating to the program and facility.
d. Maintain child and family confidentiality. Refrain from discussing the child in front of him/her.
e. Is consistently courteous and considerate, in person and on the telephone, in interactions with children and others such as family, visitors, vendors, and other employees.
f. Exhibit the “At Your Service” attitude, i.e., smiles, uses positive eye contact, friendly, open and approachable.
g. Respond quickly to children and/or parent/guardian’s request, refers to appropriate member of the care team, if necessary, and informs supervisor of actions taken.
h. Promote positive co-worker relationships, teamwork and cooperation.
i. Work collaboratively and is respectful of others.
j. Take individual responsibility for providing outstanding service quality.
k. Refer parents/guardians/therapists to teacher regarding children’s educational programming.

 

Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalency required
  • Criminal background check (CBC) clearance required
  • Within six (6) months of hire obtain NYS Teacher Assistant Certification required
  • Ability to communicate and work effectively and cooperatively required
  • Experience working with children and special education students preferred
  • Warm calm demeanor required

Physical aspects may include but are not limited to lifting and transferring of students.
