Overview

The Senior Staff Accountant is an important member of the BCCS Accounting Department with responsibilities related to providing timely and accurate transaction processing and analyses for BCCS.

 

The Senior Staff Accountant operates under the guidance of the Accounting Manager and must be a team player with good communication, analytical, computer skills and current FASB non-profit pronouncements. These skills are required to effectively perform analyses and accounting work to support the financial statement close process, the New York State Consolidated Fiscal Report (“NYS CFR”) contract filing analysis and meeting audit requirements.

Responsibilities

Financial Close Support: Timely and accurate processing in accordance with the monthly financial close calendar including:

  • Prepare journal entries in accord with the monthly financial close calendar for BCCS. These duties include, but are not limited to:
    • Record accounts receivable invoices, cash receipt journal entries, fixed asset journal entry, and other journal entries to the general ledger monthly.
    • Preparation and input of journal entries for approval specific to payroll and fringe benefits.
    • Monthly account analysis for assigned income statement and balance sheet accounts, including but not limited to payroll and fringe expenses, open accounts receivable, and related liability accounts and accruals.
    • Reconcile asset and liability general ledger to related statements and schedules.
  • Maintain audit work papers and provide Trial Balance, General Ledger, work papers and Provided-By-Client (“PBC”) materials to auditors.

Budgets:

  • Assist in preparation of agency budget using financial statements, projected changes and staffing patterns.

Audits:

  • Prepare all related audit support documents, including but not limited to monthly reconciliations & work papers.
  • Support the annual audit process by timely satisfying auditors’ sample requests and other PBC items assigned by the Accounting Manager/Controller.
  • Support any contract or other regulatory audits. 

Other responsibilities:

  • Serve as back-up for other accountants as needed and determined by the Controller & Accounting Manager.
  • Special projects as required, including process optimization and system implementation.

Qualifications

Education and/ or experience required:

 

  • Bachelor’s Degree preferably in Accounting or Finance AND
  • Three (3) years of relevant work experience, preferably with a not-for-profit agency.
  • Considered a Plus:
    • Experience with preparing NYS CFR schedules.
    • Proficiency in use of Sage Intacct, UKG-Ultipro/Kronos payroll system.

  • Strong knowledge of current accounting standards and nonprofit financial reporting requirements.
  • Proficiency in Microsoft Office, including Word and advanced Excel skills (pivot tables, formulas, VLOOKUP, etc.).
  • Sharp attention to detail, strong analytical abilities, and a knack for developing practical solutions.
  • Ability to manage multiple priorities, meet deadlines in a fast‑paced environment, and work independently with minimal supervision
  • Position requires a strong work ethic, the ability to prioritize and complete tasks with a sense of urgency, flexibility in scheduling, and a demonstrated commitment to advancing the mission of the agency.

This position may require extended periods of time sitting and standing and may occasionally be required to carry or lift files and/or file boxes.
